Since the mid-1950s, Thurston County alone has lost over 75% of its working agricultural lands. In the last five years, the acreage of actively farmed land in the county has dropped nearly in half. That’s more than 35,000 acres – an area greater than the cities of Lacey, Tumwater, and Olympia combined. We live in one of the fastest-growing areas of Washington, and if we don’t act now, we could lose the last of our precious remaining farmland.
At the same time, affordable, secure land tenure eludes many farmers. The high costs associated with buying and owning land present barriers to many who seek to make their living in agriculture.
The Community Farm Land Trust is working to ensure that our local farms don’t disappear. We engage in farmland preservation strategies, community partnerships, and public educational outreach to increase opportunities for farms and farmers to flourish. Our memberships support our work and allow us to keep saving farmland in the South Sound while helping to sustain our local food security for years to come.
