Title: Director of Development & Administration
Status: Exempt, 2/3rd time with potential for growth to full-time
Closing Date: Friday, January 22, 2016
Compensation: $2,861 per month plus $350 monthly health supplement
Roles and Responsibilities:
The Director of Development & Administration will be responsible for achieving the fundraising goals of the organization as well as engaging, cultivating and soliciting donors, corporate sponsors and securing foundation, tribal and other grants in support of the general operations. The position is also responsible for the administering the general membership program and maintaining the board records.
We are seeking candidates who not only have the background needed to perform this job but are willing and able to grow with the organization. The Trust has two paid positions at this time, both reporting directly to the working Board of Directors. The position works closely with the Board of Directors and the other staff position. As our role preserving farmland grows, the Board seeks to transition to a governing Board with a full-time Executive Director.
This position is primarily office-based, though working from time to time at home is acceptable. Evening and weekend work is a typical part of the development function.

Primary Responsibilities:
Development
- Establishes short and long-range goals for funding sources
- Develops and implements strategies for the cultivation and solicitation of major gift prospects, including corporate, foundation, institutions, and/or individual donors
- Develop effective and engaging outreach and education programs that support positive community relations
- Develops and grows individual donor base; manages annual giving, major gifts, planned giving and capital campaigns to achieve fundraising and planned giving goals
- Establishes strong relationships with key constituents and solicits funds on behalf of the organization
- Identify foundation prospects for grants and prepare successful grant proposals
- Trains and leads board, volunteers and staff members to support fundraising and communications efforts
- Integrate fundraising work with all organizational initiatives by working effectively with other staff, contractors and the Board of Directors.
- Work with the Development Committee chair to schedule meetings, create agendas, and facilitating discussions
Membership/Outreach
- Manage all donor contact information for accuracy
- Outreach to farmland owners including creating informational materials, presentations at rural organizations, and visiting with farmers several years before they plan for sale of their farm
- Report membership trends and notable activity
- Process donations and record in donor database (MyDonorTools)
- Prepare and mail thank you letters, acknowledgements of tax deductible donations, Annual Appeal letters and the Annual Report
- Take leadership in hiring contractors to or in planning and implementation of all events, including annual membership meeting, Farms Forever benefit dinner, and other outreach and fundraising events
- Create and distribute the annual Farm Map publication including soliciting farm listings, ads and sponsors, and contracting for the layout and printer coordination work
- Professionally represent the organization to donors, sponsors, community groups, and public agencies
- Create and distribute marketing and public relations materials
Administration
- Lease contract support
- Assist Board in administrating a range of leases (land and building)
- Establish and maintain an in-office system to assure lease compliance, coordinate recordkeeping and invoicing with contracted bookkeeper
- Office Management & Operational Support
- Provide general information to the public, open and route mail and answer phone calls
- Provide consistently excellent customer service for the range of people in the Trust community including farmers, donors, and representatives of partner agency
- Track and update changes to Trust policy and procedures
- Oversee record keeping of Policies and Procedures in a manner consistent with accreditation standards
- Maintain physical files in accordance with the Recordkeeping Policy
- Copy and file general operations grant documents to ensure compliance and acknowledgement of grants
Required Education, Skills and Experience:
- A Bachelor's degree or equivalent education from an accredited institutions, with preference for master’s in public or non-profit administration or related field
- A minimum of five years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, non-profit leadership, public relations, marketing or related fields
- Ability to form positive relationships with donors and constituent groups
- Demonstrated ability to prospect, cultivate, and solicit gifts including major gifts
- Demonstrated excellence in written, oral, and interpersonal communication
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically with thorough understanding of strategic fundraising
- Experience working with volunteer leadership including Board of Directors
- Demonstrated knowledge of fundraising principles and practices, and willingness to stay up to date on trends and strategies
- Familiarity with nonprofit best practices, including budget creation and management
- Demonstrated organizational and time management skills
- Demonstrated strong leadership abilities including strategic thinking and team problem solving
- Proficient computer skills including social media
Preferred Experience
- Financial management experience
- Strong connections with foundations and groups with a vested interest in support of food production in Thurston county to meet the demand for local food in the Puget Sound region
